The Koreans came in big numbers, but Jun Mizutani stole Korea’s Joo Se Hyuk title, so to speak, as Joo was the top seed in the Men’s Singles event at GAC GROUP 2012 ITTF World Tour Kuwait Open which started on Tuesday 14th February. Ranked at no.6 on the Men’s World Rankings, Joo's highest ever ranking on this Pro Tour, renamed to World or Global Tour.  For such a rich host country, offering only $21,000 for the winner explains why the big players didn't show up.  Just imagine how many tournaments Jun Mizutani has flown to and how many hotels he has stayed at in a year.  He would not even have money to live off with when he gets back home.  This tells you that the top 4 Chinese men and Timo Boll (again) did not attend.  That meant that 1 MA Long  2 ZHANG Jike 3 WANG Hao 5 XU Xin didn't show up.   This also meant the number two seed Jun Mizutani should have had to play Joo in the final.  It was a Korea vs Japan final but Joo Se-Hyuk wasn't there!

Kuwait Men's singles Final

Jun Mizutani of Japan took out Ryu Seung Min of Korea (the 2004 Athens Olympic champion), in the men's final 4:1 with plenty of lobs and great rallies.  Ryu started the first game very strong with convincing powerful forehand killers, but it would only last for the first game.  Jun got into a rhythm of his own after that.  It was an exciting 5-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6 win.   Funny enough, his last  World Tour title was earnt at the 2010 KAL Cup Pro Tour Grand Finals in South Korea.   Ryu Seung Min’s  counter drives from one end to the other over a great distance is proof of his perfect footwork which is better than that of anyone in the Korean history of table tennis.  Does a left-handed shakehand player have an advantage over right-handed korean grip with rubber only on one side of his bat?

Although Ryu is one of my favorite players to watch, he was not the hardest table tennis player to overcome.  Jun had to work a lot harder against Taipei's Chuang Chih-Yuan and Kim Min Seok of Korea to get to the final.

Kuwait Men's Semifinals

Jun had to work a lot harder it would seem in the semifinal with Chuan Chih Yuan, 4:2 13:11 in the last game.  Whilst a Korean Semifinal was inevitable, Joo Se Hyuk's unique style was not unique to his Korean team mate Ryu Seung Min.  Ryu had no problem's at all against the chopper, knocking the number 1 seed, 4:0.  Even when Joo is expected to win, he can not win a title.  Joo only managed to win 27 points in the whole match, compare that to the 44 of Ryu, it shows that Ryu performance was almost twice as good!

Kuwait Men's singles quarter finals

In the Men's Singles Quarter final, Korea’s Joo Se Hyuk still didn't lose a game and proved that he had all the answers against the hard hitting short pipped forehand of Singapore’s Zhan Jian, the no.24 seed in four straight games (11-4, 11-9, 11-7, 11-9).  These would be the last time he saw magical 11 appear on his side of the scoreboard.   And then Japan's Jun Mizutani finished off Kim Min Seok, to hault the Korean invasion; Jun won in six games (13-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-6, 9-11, 11-8).

Earlier in Kuwait's Men's Singles

In round 3, Ryu Seung Min of Korea (world ranking 15) showed all his potential to get to the final match beating Ahmed Ali Saleh of Egypt (world ranking 149) 4:0.  In the Kuwait open Men's single round 2, Kenta Matsudaira of Japan fought hard and long to win in the 7th game 11:8 against the young modern defender Filus Ruwen of Germany.   Where as, Yang Zi couldn't take a game off Joo Se Hyuk.  In the Kuwait second round of the Men's singles qualifying groups, Alexey Liventsov of Russia beat  Cedric Nuytinck (Bel) 4:0.

Men's Under 21

Shouman

In the Kuwait under 21 boys qualifying groups, Lauric Jean of Belgium didn't lose a game to Shouman Mohamed of Egypt, wrapping it up in under 20 minutes.  The Belgian guy Jean Lauric has such an unusually long hair like Bjorn Borg in 1970’s, when all other table tennis professionals, including those on the women’s side have short hair! If he wants to establish himself with such a conspicuous image, he’d better earn “it” with at least several international major singles titles, or cut his long hair soon.  The lighter blue on Lauric Jean's shirt made him look like he had breasts.

In the under 21 quarter final Quentin Robinot of France lost a close 45 minute match against Turkey's Ahmet Li in the 7th game 11:8.  Don't be fooled by the name and nationality of Ahmed. He has Chinese technique; Chinese equipment; Chinese coach; Turkish nationality. We all look forward to seeing him on the senior circuit.

Videos will be added to the youtube table tennis playlist above as they emerge on youtube so that you can watch them all in one place.  So make sure to check back daily.  And also you can check out the full streaming matches at the ittf.com below and many more.
